On December 12th at 2:00 at the Missouri Department of Conservation building (701 James McCarthy Drive, MWSU campus) in the main conference room, Dan Fogell, a biologist/herpetologist with Southeast Nebraska University, will talk about the Timber rattlesnake research he has been doing in Richardson County Nebraska.

Cost: FREE
This is a family friendly event with a focus on Amphibians & Reptiles in Missouri. We will have live animals, including snakes, turtles, and frogs. Come see some rare herps like the state endangered Western Massasauga Rattlesnake & the Alligator Snapping Turtle. There will be Crafts, handouts, educational talks, and lots of hands on experiences.

Special Herp Presentation

January 24th (Saturday) from 11-?, we are excited to welcome Jeff Briggler, Missouri's state herpetologist. "Herpetology Happens in Missouri" is the title of Jeff's presentation. Jeff works for the Missouri Department of Conservation and his presentation is one you do not want to miss. He has been instrumental in the conservation of the state endangered Ozark Hellbender, he has traveled extensively studying herps around the world and has a genuine passion for all things slimy and scaly. 


Jeff Briggler, MDC wildlife biologist and the State Herpetologist, will give a presentation titled, "Herpetology Happens in Missouri," on Saturday, January 24th, 11:00 AM at the Northwest Regional Office of the Missouri Department of Conservation located at 701 James McCarthy Drive (MWSU campus). This talk is free and open to the public and is for anyone interested in amphibians and reptiles or wildlife conservation The presentation is cosponsored by the Pony Express Amphibian and Reptile Society (PEARS) and the Missouri Western chapter of Beta Beta Beta (National Biological Honors Society). If you have questions please feel free to contact Mark Mills at 271-4384 or Shelly Cox at 271-3111 ext. 1442 or visit the PEARS website www.pearsherps.org.

Come join us as we celebrate the world of amphibians and reptiles at our 3rd annual Herp-o-rama.

Friday, June 13th we will welcome three guest speakers in the field of herpetology.

Dr. Dan Fogell is a professor of biology and herpetology and the author of the amphibians and reptiles of Nebraska.

Dan Krull is an environmental consultant and herpetologist. In a world of free apps. he will be presenting on the Herp Mapping app. Learn why this app is of vital importance to learning more about reptile and amphibian populations and distributions.

Dr. Jay McGhee, biologist with NWMSU will give a presentation on salamanders of Virginia. Salamanders are reclusive and often hard to find, but are of vital importance to the ecosystems where they occur. Come learn more about these amazing animals.

Saturday June 14th we will be featuring live native and exotic snakes. Live turtles, including the state endangered Alligator Snapping Turtle. There will also be amphibians, games & crafts for the kids, informational displays, free educational handouts and informative talks given by expert herpetologists. This event is educational, fun and family oriented. Leave with a whole new appreciation and respect for some of the most vilified and misunderstood animals on the planet. Admission is free both days.

PEARS Monthly Meeting for May

May 9th, 6:30 p.m. 

Kate Kelly with MDC will be our guest presenter. She works for MDC in Jefferson City and is the NAAMP project coordinator for Missouri. She will discuss the Frog/Toad calling surveys in Missouri and the importance of monitoring our 4 legged amphibians. After her presentation at MDC, we will head to Squaw Creek where Darrin has graciously agreed to lead us around the refuge like we did last year to look for herps and listen for frogs.

Dan Krull with Herp Nation radio will be our guest presenter. Dan hails from Kansas and raises hognose snakes. He is quite knowledgeable and a very enjoyable, engaging speaker. Hognose snakes are a charming, interesting snake native to Missouri and the surrounding states. This is definitely a must attend meeting for those interested in learning more about them. We will have live specimens for handling and viewing.
