WESTERN WORM SNAKE
Carphophis vermis
Constrictor- Nonvenomous
Adults get to be 7-11 inches. They are considered fossorial and spend most of the time buried in loose, rocky soil, or under leaf litter. They use their flat heads to dig these burrows. They are abundant within their range, but rarely seen due to their secretive nature. The markings of the snake are black to purple to brownish dorsal with a lighter pink, or orange reddish underside.
Small snakes found statewide except for the extreme southeastern corner of Missouri. The worm snake's diet consists almost entirely of earthworms, but it will also consume soft-bodied insects.
