WESTERN NARROW-MOUTH TOAD
Gastrophryne olivacea
These small toads have smooth skin and may be olive-green, greenish-gray or gray-brown. There is usually dark blotches or spots all over the body. Belly is lighter in color. There is a hood of skin over the eyes to protect them from the bites of their preferred food source—ants.
Length: 1 ½ inches
They occur in a few counties in Northwestern Missouri as well as a few counties along the Missouri River. These are very secretive toads and are often found under rock or log piles. Also known as the Great Plains Narrow-mouth Toad.
