AMERICAN BULLFROG
​Lithobates catesbeianus

These common frogs are found throughout Missouri. They are olive-green with brown blotches on their bodies. Belly is whitish with yellow or gray spots. Face is usually bright green. Males have a yellow throat. 

Length: 4 -6 inches with males being smaller than females.

They are capable of jumping 10x their body length aided by powerful hind legs.

Bullfrogs are used as a food source throughout the World. Bred in captivity with varying amounts of success. 

They are native to the Eastern United States. Populations have been introduced in numerous locations in the Western United States. In California they are believed the be a direct threat to the already vulnerable Red-legged frog.

​Fun Fact: tadpoles leave their watery home 
with a large tail still present. As the tail shrinks,  the fat stored inside are absorbed for extra nutrition.
